Why Kashmir

The Kashmir valley runs on water and altitude: lakes threaded with shikaras and houseboats at Srinagar, Mughal gardens terraced into the Zabarwan hills, meadow country at Gulmarg and Sonmarg, and the pine-and-river quiet of Pahalgam. Spring brings tulips and apple blossom, summer green pastures, autumn chinar gold, and winter deep skiable snow at Gulmarg. Distances are short, so a week covers the valley comfortably with private transport.

  • Shikara ride and houseboat night on Dal Lake
  • Gulmarg gondola to Kongdoori and Apharwat
  • Betaab and Aru valleys at Pahalgam
  • Sonmarg's Thajiwas glacier meadows
  • Mughal gardens and old-city crafts in Srinagar
