Northern Himachal gets a fraction of the Shimla-Manali traffic and rewards it with better views of the Dhauladhar range. You start in McLeod Ganj, the seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile, with the Dalai Lama's temple complex, Namgyal monastery and the walk to Bhagsu waterfall and Dharamkot. Then the road runs north to Dalhousie for colonial-era churches and pine promenades, with a day at Khajjiar's saucer-shaped meadow and Chamba's thousand-year-old Lakshmi Narayan temples. It suits groups and independent travellers who want hill scenery without queueing for a ropeway.
