Overview
This is the Garhwal that most Uttarakhand itineraries never reach. Following the Alaknanda upstream from Rishikesh you pass the Panch Prayag confluences at Devprayag, Rudraprayag and Karnaprayag, stay at Joshimath, ride Asia's longest cable car up to Auli's ski meadows at 3,000m, and continue to Badrinath and the last Indian village at Mana. The return runs through Chopta's high bugyals with an optional hike to Tungnath, the world's highest Shiva temple. Roads are mountain roads — the driving is real — but the payoff is Nanda Devi standing over your morning tea.

Pick-up at Dehradun and the drive up the Alaknanda, stopping where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda meet at Devprayag to become the Ganga. Overnight at Rudraprayag or Srinagar Garhwal by the river.
