You base in Shillong for the lakes, markets and viewpoints, then move to Cherrapunji — among the wettest places on earth — for its waterfalls, limestone caves and a short trek to a living root bridge. Days are unhurried enough for families and photography stops, with local Khasi guides sharing the region's matrilineal culture along the way. Guwahati's Kamakhya temple and Umananda island open and close the trip, giving a taste of Assamese heritage before you head into the hills. Day-by-day itinerary
Land at Guwahati airport and drive three hours up into the Khasi hills to Shillong, stopping at Umiam Lake for photographs of its forested islands. Evening free to walk Police Bazar and try Khasi jadoh and pork dishes at a local eatery.
