Ten Schengen visa mistakes that cost travellers their trip

A Schengen refusal rarely happens because someone was not a genuine traveller. It happens because the file contradicted itself. Consulates are reading for consistency more than anything else.

The most common error is applying at the wrong embassy. Your application belongs to the country where you will spend the most nights, not the first country you fly into — unless the nights are equal, in which case entry point decides.

Second is the itinerary that does not match the bookings. If your cover letter says four nights in Rome but the hotel confirmation shows three, that single discrepancy is enough to trigger a rejection.

Third is the last-minute bank balance. A large deposit two weeks before applying reads as borrowed funds. A stable six-month balance reads as capacity, even if the number is smaller.

Insurance is the fourth. It must cover EUR 30,000 in medical expenses across every Schengen country for the entire duration, including the days you are in transit.

The rest are smaller but just as fatal: unsigned forms, photographs that fail the biometric standard, expired passports, missing employer letters, applying too late for a peak-season appointment, and leaving the purpose of travel vague. Fix these and the application usually takes care of itself.
